IELTS, an abbreviation for International English Language Testing System is a standardized test used to evaluate a students’ proficiency in the English Language. First introduced in 1989, the IELTS today is the most trusted and popular English proficiency tests accepted for student immigration. Intended for non-English speakers, the IELTS evaluates the examinees’ English language proficiency across four disciplines – reading, writing, listening, and speaking. IELTS Test Types

The IELTS test is generally categorized into two types and an IELTS score remains valid for a period of two years.

Academic Test

The IELTS Academic is intended for those students who wish to study in an English-speaking country. Academic test is structured to address everyday situations within an academic setting.

General Training Test

IELTS General Training is recommended for those who want to study abroad in an English speak country at a level below the degree level. It is also recommended for employment related purposes as well.

IELTS Exam Format

Although there are two different IELTS test types, the listening and speaking part of the test remains the same in both the Academic and General Training test. All four tests are completed in one day itself and there are generally no breaks in between the individual tests. In total an IELTS test can last for up to three hours.

Listening Test

The applicant is required to listen to recordings of native English speakers and correctly answer the relevant questions.

Reading Test

This part of the IELTS test lasts for 60 minutes and the examinee will be required to answer a total of 40 questions up on reading the text provided. The material can vary based on whether it is an Academic or General Training test.

Writing Test

The examinee will be required to two separate writing tasks. Topics based on which the applicant will need to write can vary depending on whether it is an Academic or General Training test.

Speaking Test

As suggested by the name itself, this part of the test assess the examinee’s ability to use English for everyday conversations.

Understanding IELTS Band Scale

Simply put, your IELTS band score represents your proficiency in the English language. Check the table below to better understand your IELTS score.

Band Skill Level Meaning
9 Expert Complete command over the language
8 Very Good Complete command over the language with occasional mistakes in unfamiliar situations.
7 Good Has good command over the language but prone to make occasional mistakes from time to time.
6 Competent Has decent command over the language but prone to make errors.
5 Modest Has partial command over the language but can manage him/herself in most situations
4 Limited Basic command over the language.
3 Extremely Limited Can only understand the general meaning of what is conveyed to him or her.
2 Intermittent Only has very basic knowledge and difficult to get a real communication going.
1 Non-user Has no ability to use the language
0 Absent for the Test Did not take the test

Am I Eligible to Take
the IELTS Exam?


To be able to attend the IELTS exam, the examinee will need to be at least 16 years of age and should also have a valid passport. Usually, the IELTS exam is undertaken by those who are planning to migrate abroad in the near future. The type of test as mentioned above, will be determined based on the purpose of immigration.

What is the Validity
of my IELTS Score?
